What to Expect During an Autism or ADHD Assessment

If you are considering an autism or ADHD assessment for yourself or your child, it’s natural to have questions about what the process involves. Understanding what to expect can reduce any anxiety and help you feel more prepared for the journey ahead.

Initial Consultation

The assessment process usually begins with an initial consultation, where our clinician will gather information about your or your child’s medical history, developmental milestones, and current concerns. You may be asked about specific behaviours, challenges, and strengths that you or your child experience. This is the time to provide a comprehensive picture of what is happening.

Comprehensive Evaluation
A thorough assessment often involves multiple stages, including structured interviews, questionnaires, and observations. Depending on whether you’re being assessed as an adult or for a child, the assessment may also include input from teachers, caregivers, or other professionals. The aim is to understand the individual’s behaviour in different contexts and to gather as much information as possible.

Diagnostic Criteria
The clinician will use established standardised assessment tools, such as the ADOS-2 and ADI-R to evaluate whether your traits meet the criteria for autism, ADHD, or both. The assessment is typically very detailed to ensure an accurate and comprehensive diagnosis.

Post-Assessment Support
Once the assessment is complete, the clinician will provide feedback and a diagnosis (if applicable). At Portland Assessments, we don’t just stop at the diagnosis; we also offer actionable recommendations and resources to help you or your child move forward. Whether it’s educational strategies, therapy recommendations, or workplace accommodations, we ensure you have a clear path ahead.
